New House syndrome

Haunted House

It’s probably not coincidental that the stereotypical ‘haunted’ house is an old and rickety property in a state of disrepair.

It is common for people to suspect their house is ‘haunted’ shortly after moving in. There can be all sorts of reasons for this, but it can often boil down to simple unfamiliarity with the new environment. In a brand new home, there will be sights, sounds or smells, any of which can seem menacing or weird, until – over time – they become familiar.

However, once a person has decided that certain experiences are caused by having a ‘haunted’ house, this can create a vicious circle and prevent them from ever properly developing a sense of ease within their home.
